Methods of Iterating

First Draft (20th January 2025)

I have chosen to learn the medium Augmented Reality for the ‘methods of iterating’ brief. AR is something I came across when it first gained popularity about 8-9 years back. I wanted to learn more about the medium and tools surrounding this concept. I decided to use 3 tools, out of which 2 were more suitable for the project I copied. Adobe Aero and Unity, can achieve different results based on levels of complexity. Unity being a higher technical marker than the former.


Expectations :
It was unexpected as to how simple Aero was to achieve the desired result, in comparison to Unity. Although, Unity is much more capable in reaching a much better output, along with a steeper learning curve.

Understanding:
I feel closer to learning a completely new tool & associated softwares in the coming weeks, which will be a great addition to my skillset and enable me with new ways of engaging with design & communication.

Challenges:
It comes with certain technical challenges, e.g., It is favourable to know coding to work better with Unity. I intend to learn how to code or how to understand code to enable myself to work better with Unity. It also involves third party softwares that one needs access to in order to create a proper experience such as Vuforia & Xcode, which were issues I faced in my process.

Knowledge of graphic or communication design can guide the designer in communicating in different ways with an audience, on different spaces, through different modes of output, which can have impact on the content of communication and influence how it is perceived by an audience.


Project Proposal : The original project : Notable Women ; is important & influential as it celebrates the achievements and legacies of key women figures in history. To revive this project (it is discontinued as of now) and further explore this concept, I propose a studio-based experiment using Unity to recreate the experience with interactivity, storytelling & dynamic visuals along with the charm the original project carries. The experiment will be aimed at creating enhanced experiences, that can provide valuable information about these key figures of history, while creating engaging visuals with progressing my technical skills using this tool.

Another way would be to create an experience using a different context, using the same tools and marker, different statements can be made in other political/ historical contexts. Elements other than the portraits can also be experimented with, the physical form of the currency, distorting it, or experimenting with the information present on currency notes.
